乒乓球虽然是我国的国球，但却是英国人发明的，时至今日，英国人还称之为桌上网球。大约在清朝光绪三十年，也就是1904年前后，上海四马路（今福建路）大新街有一家文具店，店主王道平常赴日本采购一些新颖的文具用品。一次，王道平在日本看到日本人正进行一场乒乓球比赛，觉得这个活动十分有趣，又不需要很大的场地，只需一张桌子、球和拍子，于是就购买了一些乒乓器材带回上海，把它摆在商店里。

由于当时中国人并不了解它们的用处，更不知道乒乓球的打法，因此销路不好。在这样的情况下，聪明的王道平就在店中作示范，一下子吸引来了许多顾客止步观看，有的甚至也挥拍上阵。从此，在上海打乒乓球的人日渐增多，这是乒乓球首次进入中国。当时的球拍与现在大不相同。拍型长圆，拍柄瘦长，更有趣的是板上还钻有许多小窟窿。

1916年，中华基督教青年会上海分会童子部首先开设了我国最早的乒乓球房，配备了9张球台。但一般市民无缘入内，仅资本家的子弟和有钱的大学生等少数人去寻找乐趣。之后，乒乓球运动逐渐在天津、广州等大城市开展起来。

1918年，上海率先成立了乒乓球联合会。从此，乒乓球不仅仅只作为一项娱乐活动，而是开始成为一种技能、体力的比赛。1925年，在上海举行了中华队与旅华日侨之间的秋山杯比赛。1927年和1930年中国正式派出乒乓球选手参加了第八、九届远东运动会的乒乓球比赛。1935年，中华全国乒乓球协会在上海诞生，乒乓球比赛在我国才开始被列为正式的体育比赛项目。
